The Friends of Warwickshire Moor is a group of local people working in partnership with Tamworth Borough Council and Staffordshire Wildlife Trust to improve Warwickshire Moor for People & Wildlife.

Located on Moor Lane in Bolehall, in the north of Tamworth, Warwickshire Moor covers approximately 23 hectares (although we only manage 5.74 hectares). There are both woodland and wetland habitats, along with heath and grassland areas, which are home to many species from foxes and other small mammals, to an abundance of bird and insect life.

Friends Of Warwickshire Moor was established through the involvement of “Wild About Tamworth”; a project funded by Tamworth Borough Council, in partnership with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust.  The project aims to create new Local Nature Reserves (LNRs) in Tamworth, and to improve existing reserves and wild spaces.

Four years ago the project identified Warwickshire Moor as a site that would be a great LNR. Since then there have been some major site alterations on the Moor.  Both the group and Stafforshire Wildlife Trust made changes but then in 2006, thanks to funding from the Tame Valley Project and Green Arc Partnership, a 20 tonne digger and tractor dug out and opened up the main ditch which runs through the middle of the site, creating a series of pools and scrapes of various sizes. It took some time for the site to recover, but this extensive work has now improved the habitats on the site immeasurably. This is the first wetland habitat work in Tamworth to take place on such a large scale, making the Moor a flagship site when similar work on other sites in the area is considered.

BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) has also been supporting the group by installing a boardwalk and helping us to improve accessibility to the site following this wetland work.
